NEWS ALERT: Mangoprism Goes Dormant
Hello friends,
Today Mangoprism is officially going on hiatus.
We will pause the publication of new articles, and permanently halt all recurring payments that many of our generous readers have been making—in some cases for years now—to support our operation. We also will stop accepting pitches.
As editors we unfortunately no longer have enough time to sustain our mission to be an oasis for emerging writers in a desolate media industry.
My brother Daniel and I would like Mangoprism to return in the future, and have long talked about handing off responsibility to others. But to reimagine the publication will require a period of dormancy that allows us to slow down and assess if and how we can set it up to be successful and robust for the long haul.
The website will remain active, and the featured article on the homepage will range through the 100-plus pieces we have published over the years.
My brother founded Mangoprism more than a decade ago as a blog, and a few years ago we decided to partner up to fashion it into a modest but proper institution.
This meant drawing a revenue stream, paying contributors, redesigning our website, and seeking readers and writers and artists outside our immediate social circles—in some cases, continents away. We established season-long artist “residencies.” We had contributing editors. We released two print issues.
Much of this was done with the help of our talented and wonderful-to-work-with friend and designer, Eric Rannestad.
My brother and I have always run this site as volunteers. He stepped away last year, and it’s become clear that I can’t keep spending Sundays reading pitches, editing, and doing the administrative tasks it takes to manage this little operation well.
The main thing I want to say, however, is thank you. Over the years you have read, contributed to, and financially backed this publication. We are honored by your support.
Until next time,
Andrew Schwartz,
Editor, Mangoprism
